Bhutanese Festivals

Tshechus are sacred, joyous occasions meant to invoke blessings, wash away sins, and teach Buddhist morality. It is believed that everyone should witness a Tshechu at least once.

Tsechu's include Cham (Mask) Dances performed by monks and laymen wearing elaborate costumes and masks. The dances are the highlight of the multi-day event serving as prayers and reenactments of religious stories from the 8th century.

They are a major social event where communities come together in their finest traditional attire (Gho and Kira) to socialize, celebrate, and receive blessings.

Masked clowns known as Atsaras roam the festivities, performing skits, providing entertainment, and breaking up serious moments with social commentary.

Major Tshechus: While held throughout the country, some of the most famous include the Paro Tshechu and the Thimphu Tshechu, Punakha Dromche, and Jambay Lhakhang Drup (sacred naked dance), which draw large crowds.

Bhutan Sublime will arrange every detail of your Tshechu experience visit including arranging for you to wear traditional Bhutanese dress, if you wish.
